Custom LED Brake Lights

Custom LED Brake Lights

Here's what the original 1954 Canadian Pontiac tail lights look like (exactly the same as Chevys):

A very bad set of 1953 Chevy-Pontiac tail lights came with the car

When I first looked at the rear taillights, they were 1953 models. I was planning on modifying 1980 Cutlass Supreme taillight lens. They are large enough and have the correct vertical orientation. I was going to cut them to size and use electrical conduit to form the rounded lip and weld it to the fender. The other choice is to cut up some of the 1953 taillight housings that I have. They are in very poor shape and are not suitable for restoring.

Initially going to modify 1980 Cutlass Supreme tail lights to fit

Came across a nice set of 1954 Chevy taillight chrome and decided that with an aftermarket solid red lens, it would look pretty nice:

1954 chrome and custom solid red lens.

Again for lights I will use red super bright LEDs probably about 40 per side and mount them on board. I'm using 1954 Chevy rear taillight housings with an aftermarket one piece red lens. It looks very nice. My only worry is how dark red the lens is and whether superbright LEDs are bright enough to shine through. My backup plan is to vacuum form a new set of lens using ceiling flourescent lighting fixture lens for the raw plastic. I can spray paint them from the inside with candy apple red paint to get the right color.
