A word about Extensions and Dial Plans

A word about Extensions and Dial Plans

In most of the documentation that you will read about Asterisk, it will tell you how to manually configure the dial plans by editing the text file(s) like extensions.conf. This is NOT the way PBX in a Flash works. You do NOT edit extensions.conf or most of the configuration files directly, instead you use the web based configuration client FreePBX.

FreePBX uses a mySQL database to track the configuration files and then modifies the text file extensions.conf and other configuration files. Any changes that you make to the .conf files run the risk of being over-written by FreePBX and lost.

In FreePBX, there are 3 main places to add your dial-plans: Trunks, Inbound Routes and Outbound Routes. Each menu item has a text box for you to add your dialplan in. There is also a wizard that will aid you in creating simple dialplans.

After saying all that, there are .conf files that you can modify. When you open a .conf file, it will tell you at the beginning if you can or cannot modify this file. Always check first! Here's where you'll find the dirt on PBX in a Flash's configuration files.
