Mailing Lists for Education

Listservers Information Sources

A list server is basically an email server that has a list of email addresses of individuals that are interested in a specific topic. You email to the list email address and everyone on the list receives a copy of the message.

For example: a list could be cmph-235@school.ab.ca. This would be the course name. Any students who have subscribed to the list would receive any email sent to cmph-235@school.ab.ca. The email would be forwarded to them. Normally, the list is moderated much like a newsgroup moderator and closed to the public for subscribing. Subscribing costs nothing and is the term used to join the list.

Typically to subscribe, you send an email to the list (cmph-235@school.ab.ca) with only the word SUBSCRIBE in the body of the text. You return address is added to the list. To unsubscribe, you send only the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the body of the text to the list.
