Voltage

Potential Difference

Voltage is the electrical pressure from a stored charge. Voltage is also known as the electromotive force denoted by E. The unit of voltage is known as the volt (V) which is defined in terms of the work done and number of coulombs of charge moved. The unit of electronic work is the joule (J).

A volt is defined as the amount of electrical pressure or potential difference that exists between two points when 1 joule of work is done moving 1 coulomb of charge from one point to another.

In mathematical terms, voltage is expressed as:

V = W / Q

	Where:	V = Voltage	Units: Volts (V)
		W = Work	Units: Joules (J)
		Q = Charge	Units: Coulombs (C)
