INTRODUCTION

Background

Salal* Architecture is a small architectural firm, based on Bowen Island near Vancouver, BC, Canada. Daniel Parke is the principal. Recent work includes custom houses, renovations, multi-family residential, commercial buildings, sustainable planning, and health care projects.

Process

We spend a lot of time listening to clients, and are able to be highly responsive, creative and flexible in the ways we meet clients’ needs.  We consider ourselves to be “guides” who assist and support clients as projects evolve. We tend to let the look and feel of buildings be determined by site influences—sun, wind, views, trees, neigbouring buildings-- and by the use, materials, and layout of each building. In this sense, we let the process drive the design (rather than fashion whims). We don’t impose pre-conceived agendas, and the results of this collaborative design process are often pleasantly surprising to clients.

Green

We have a strong interest in environmental issues, and encourage clients to take the long view and to minimize the impact of their project on the environment. All buildings and developments require a vast amount of time, energy and resources to plan, build and operate. Our task is to ensure clients get the best possible building while using resources effectively and responsibly.
