Installing Seat Belts

Installing Seat Belts

I wanted to have a seat belt with a shoulder strap but the roof pillar isn't strong enough. I thought that a roll bar would work and coincidentally a neighbor down the alley happened to throw out some exercise machines. One thing lead to another and I ended up with a 4 point roll bar to bolt the shoulder belt to!

I found that Chevy pickup trucks have a nice simple retractable waist and shoulder belt mechanism that can be mounted neatly next to the seat with one big grade 8 bolt. They also came in the right color - Blue!

Extended cab pickup truck seatbelts wouldn't work as they are too complicated. I came across a mid 80s Oldsmobile or Buick that had nice and simple rear seat lap belt retractors. They also had prettier buckles. I picked up the front buckles and adapted them to work with the pickup truck shoulder belts by adding spacers to the buckle. The pickup truck belt snap was narrower.

I was able to use the front and rear center belts from the car so now I have seatbelts for 6 people! Wahoo, let's party!
