Engine Resources

  • Grape Ape's website has lots of very valuable technical information on how, why and what you should do to make your engine pump out the horsepower.

  • If you need to look up Chev casting numbers than Mortec's website has information on heads, blocks, etc.. An alternative is to purchase Catalog of Chevy V-8 Engine Casting Numbers 1955-93 and Stamped Numbers. This book is a must if you routinely surf the wreckers or swap meets looking for engine parts.

    casting numbers

  • Buick Factory Experimental Engines - OHC big block V8s, turbocharged versions, mechanical fuel injection versions and aluminum block V8

  • Moser Engine Corporation's experimental DOHC heads for the small block chevy.

  • For the Pontiac enthusiast, there's goatman's website where he berates Chev engines about the virtues of owning an Iron Indian engine. Definitely interesting reading..

  • Pontiac's experimental engine development. There were SOHC and DOHC big block V8s, SOHC inline 6s, supercharged V8s, mechanical fuel injection versions and aluminum block V8s

I was planning on putting a Pontiac 400 in my car, but they are much too wide to fit. The other choice is the Pontiac 301 which after researching, I found out to be considered the worst V8 ever designed not to mention that their is almost no aftermarket support for it.

  • I also thought about the Pontiac Sprint OHC straight 6 from the late 60s which would of been extremely cool and generates lots of torque and reasonable hp (230 hp) in stock form, except that parts are unbelievably expensive. The clincher was when I started researching (on the advice of another rodder) the basic components like the distributer cap, water pump, etc.. You can't easily get these parts. I plan on driving my car to some of the major car shows across North America, I can't take the chance that I will get stuck, waiting 2-3 days for a water pump to show up or have to machine one.

  • Here's links to inliner's resources including one detailed hop up of a 292 cid Stovebolt:

  • Here's a few websites that detail how to rebuild an engine. I like them because they talk about the little things that most websites ignore.
    • Monte Carlo SS website has lots of good all around information on their tech page.
